One in five children diagnosed and 50% of adults still do not survive the disease.
Thanks to research, survival rates for patients with leukemia and malignant blood disorders have increased significantly.
The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation has been working for more than 35 years, driven by our purpose: to achieve that leukemia becomes, one day, a 100% curable disease for everyone and in all cases.
The three main areas of work of the Foundation:
Scientific research: the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute is the first European research centre focused on leukemia and malignant blood diseases, and one of the few of its kind in the world. It has more than 400 professionals and active projects in various areas.
Bone marrow donor registry (REDMO): REDMO, the only donor registry in Spain, has access to and manages a database with more than 40 million donors available worldwide. Thanks to its work, more than 14,600 unrelated transplants have been carried out worldwide.
Patient experience: the patient experience improvement programme provides a medical guidance service and social resources. Since 2010, more than 48,200 consultations have been attended. It also carries out outreach and support projects aimed at the care and wellbeing of patients. And accommodation housing: The “A home away from home” programme of the Foundation offers 10 accommodation apartments located near the main reference centres for bone marrow transplants in the Barcelona area, and adapted to the special needs of patients and their families. A total of 867 unique patients have stayed in the accommodation apartments and solidarity hotels since 1994. A total of 1,734 people have been assisted, including patients and caregivers.
